In my defense, how many New Yorkers haven’t been to the Statue of Liberty? Or San Franciscans to Angel Island? Or Californians to Hollywood?ĭid people realize how far away the Salt Flats were? Or how little there was en route that would draw travelers? How many people would jump at the chance to drive out to the middle of nowhere to see salt? Show of hands: how many people would willingly drive 3 hours round-trip to the middle of nowhere? When I’d respond with an “I’ve never been there” comment, the look of shock and not-so-silent judgement is clear. Whenever I would be traveling back in California or wherever, people would always ask me about those darn Salt Flats. Apparently if the salt dries on the car it's like cement and impossible to get off.I’ve lived in Utah for just over 7 years now, and I’m finally able to say that I’ve experienced walking on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

If you go in a rental car, make sure to do this right away. Well worth the travel from Texas just to experience an hour in this beautiful place! After we left, we took the short drive across state lines to an old fashioned car wash (the kind you do yourself) and SCRUBBED the jeep down to get rid of any trace of salt left on the undercarriage. We were brave enough to drive our rental Jeep a whopping 12 miles an hour! We only drove out about a quarter of a mile, but it was amazing. It was so beautiful to sell the amazing flat salt plains surrounded by mountains and beautiful blue sky! From what I understand, the speed limit on the salt flats is 1000 miles an hour. After driving just under two hours to the flats, we arrived in the most unique place I've been in a long time. We decided to go on the third day to give it as much time to dry as possible.

It was pouring down rain the first day we were there and we were only in town for three days, so this was a downer. After doing a lot of research that night, we decided to go anyway, and only drive very slowly out on the salt just far enough to get a photo and hope that we didn't get in trouble! Also note that you should not drive on the salt flats if it has rained that day. We did not know this until we got the the rental car place (that I paid a ridiculous amount of money for a jeep at for the sole purpose of riding on the flats😞) and saw the big sign at the counter stating that you were not allowed to drive any of their vehicles at the salt flats. NOTE: most car companies will not allow you to drive their cars on the Salt Flats. The closest big airport was Salt Lake City, so we flew in and decided to rent a Jeep to take out to the salt flats and have a little fun. My daughter had seen something about this online, so we planned a trip to take her here for a visit.
